Saint Dimitrios is celebrated in Thessaloniki
The patron saint of St. Demetrius celebrating today Sunday, October 26, Thessaloniki.
Agios Dimitrios, who was born around 280-284 AD and probably died in 306 [1] in Thessaloniki, is one of the great martyr of Christianity. According to tradition, in prison blessed disciple Nestor "katasfragisas this front by the cross", defeating the pagan wrestler Lyaio 'body size and strength in the submitted him. "The victory of Nestor enraged Emperor Maximian who was present at that stage and so while Nestor was beheaded, and the puncture Dimitrios murdered at hand ("spear compromised the side").
In Byzantine icons and contemporary hagiography Saint Demetrios presented several times as a rider on a red horse, unlike the white horse of St. George, to the unbelieving Lyaio clicks.
