"The transition from Late Antiquity to the Islamic era, Syria 7th-9th centuries "

To MIET, the Cultural Society of Panorama and the Museum of Byzantine Culture invite you to a lecture by art historian at the Benaki Museum, Anne Ballian.

The study of the art of both early Islamic centuries started in the late 19th and early 20th century with the discovery and the publication of some very important monuments, then as now, were preserved and rescued, with some of them nearly intact. This is the Dome of the Rock Mosque in Damascus, the bath complex of Qusayr Amra and the facade of the palace castle Mshatta. These monuments are located in the greater Syria, or Vilad al-Sham, as it was known in the Arabic-language world.

During last century, when the pioneers travelers and scholars lay the foundations of the new branch of the then Islamic archeology and art, focusing on these early Islamic monuments, essentially detecting the post-rotation process and the transition of the provinces of the Eastern Roman Empire from Late Antiquity to the Islamic era.
