Rare pictures of the earthquake of 6.5 on the Richter scale that rocked Thessaloniki on the 20.06.1978
Rare pictures of the devastating earthquake of 6,5 Richter that rocked Thessaloniki, on June 20, 1978 at 11.00 in the evening, were taken by the late Professor of Geology Department of AUTH, Constantine Soldatos. This followed a period of intense activity before the earthquake with larger pre-earthquake 5,8 Richter (24.5.78) and 5.3 Richter (19.6.78).

The devastating report was 49 dead, hundreds injured, thousands homeless and hundreds of buildings collapsed or wounded irreparably. Most victims caused by the collapse of the building in the Hippodrome Square, where it currently the Thessaloniki History Centre.

According to Gr. Geology Professor of AUTH Kingdom Papazachos "The powerful earthquake of June 20, 1978 in Mygdonia basin had adverse effects, particularly in the town of Thessaloniki which killed 49 people and destroyed or severely damaged the quarter of the city's buildings. But the genesis of the destructive earthquake that had positive effects, among which is the creation of a network of seismographs AUTH, the genesis of the Institute of Engineering Seismology and Earthquake Engineering as the first national center for interdisciplinary research on earthquake issues and the development of research on issues such as seismic hazard and earthquake prediction in the Aristotle University Geophysical Laboratory.

The genesis of the destructive earthquake on 6/20/1978 was the main reason for constructing the building of the central seismological station Thessaloniki original seven regional stations and the procurement of their equipment. Then the seismographic network was developed and today includes 34 stations that cover the entire Greece and 11 in other specific network monitoring of the volcano of Santorini. In the Central Seismological Station of AUTH now come signals from 112 seismic stations located in our country, and many stations from neighboring Balkan countries (Albania, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Turkey etc.) and other countries ( Italy etc.). Produced, thus, high quality and quantity of instrumental seismological observations sent daily in authoritative global seismological centers and exploited internationally to produce broader geophysical and seismological knowledge.

At the same time, credible and reliable information is available directly to the State, but ordinary citizens, through the website of the Seismological Network of AUTH (http://geophysics.geo.auth.gr/ss/) while the scientific staff of AUTH constantly informs lectures, guided tours and other activities of the Greek society and especially the younger generation in schools, to issues seismicity, seismic hazard and seismic risk management ".
