Humanitarian assistance provided by the Hellenic Red Cross local branch in Chios
The Hellenic Red Cross local branch in Chios has been actively supporting migrants and refugees from the beginning of the current migration-refugee crisis.
Initially the situation was manageable, but the large increase in refugee flows during last year complicated the overall situation.
The Chios local branch, with the support of the Central Administration and the valuable assistance of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies was able to meet the increased challenges and have been offering important services including the operation of a first aid clinic and a child-friendly space, provision of restoring family links services, humanitarian aid distributions among others.
Following the agreement between the EU and Turkey, however, led to the withdrawal of many NGOs from the former "hot spot" of Viale. The Hellenic Red Cross local branch has remained active and tried it’s best to cover the existing gaps.
We must pay tribute to both our staff and the thousands of volunteers, who continue to give their best to provide relief to our fellow citizens in difficult conditions and for a long period of time, remaining loyal to the Fundamental Principles of the Movement.
We must express our thanks also to the Chios local community and the authorities for the excellent cooperation and assistance provided to us, and for the great sense of solidarity exhibited.
