President of Hellenic Red Cross meets Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Lesvos
The President of the Hellenic Red Cross (HRC), Dr. Antonios Avgerinos met the Mayor of Lesvos, Mr. Spyros Galynos, and the Deputy Mayor for European Projects, Development and Finance, Mr. Konstantinos Katsaros, on 12 May at the HRC headquarters in Athens.
During the discussion that followed the President reaffirmed his deep appreciation to the members of the municipal administration and especially to the Mayor of Lesvos for the important role they have played coordinating the efforts to deal with the current migration-refugee crisis. He expressed pride for the citizens of Lesvos who, despite the difficulties they have themselves encountered, are demonstrating their warmth towards people in need.
While referring to the already close cooperation in various fields including health care at refugee accommodation centers, Mr Avgerinos reiterated the intention of HRC to continue providing every assistance to the municipality for the establishment of permanent accommodation structures for vulnerable migrants and refugees in specially designed areas, taking into account both environmental and social parameters. The Hellenic Red Cross and the Municipality of Lesvos will soon begin initiatives for integrating specific vulnerable populations into the economic life of the local community.
Mr. Galynos thanked on his part the Hellenic Red Cross and Mr. Avgerinos for the constant HRC team presence on the island providing various types of assistance. This includes daily humanitarian aid distributions (such as survival kits, family, female and baby parcels, sleeping bags, drinking water, dry food, etc.), rescue services by a group of HRC Samaritans, Rescuers and Lifeguards, basic health care services, first aid, psychosocial support, restoring family links, and other activities.
