Saying goodbye to Kerkini Lake

Saying goodbye to Kerkini Lake
There are few times when I search for the "lost magic" simple and quiet life. An escape that would call this the "next door" is the Kerkini lake is just 85 km from the bustling Thessaloniki. Source of life for many birds and not only is of the wetland, which still looks like one of the most beautiful destinations that one can explore.
History
There are many reports of ancient historians who wrote about the richness of the region in waterfowl, but also for the forests of oak, beech, pine and chestnut. In these places survived casually boars, deer, bears, bulls and leopards and lions. Besides characteristic remains the reference of history Herodotus for the attack that received the camels of Xerxes when he crossed Mount Dysoron (shock).
From the beginning, though, of the 20th century and especially after the Asia Minor Catastrophe thousands of refugees to the region, living in squalid conditions without proper infrastructure. Feature is that between 1922-1924 dies 20% of the 85,000 total refugees. Then the Greek government is forced to design large-scale interventions and 1928, mandate a US company to implement drainage projects in the Struma valley. Within rather record at the time drained the lake Achinos and swampy areas, while in 1932 the first dam delivered village Lithotopos (a milestone in our journey), creating an artificial lake that takes its name from Mount Kerkini or Belles.
