Uber has been granted a licence to continue operating in London

Today Uber has been granted a licence to continue operating in London, after a court battle with Transport for London (TfL) who rejected its application last year over safety concerns.

Westminster Magistrates' Court said Uber was now a "fit and proper" operator "despite historical failings".

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “Public safety is paramount, so TfL was absolutely right not to renew Uber’s licence last November after identifying failures that directly put passengers in danger. I am pleased that Uber have admitted that their response to very real concerns about passenger safety was inadequate, and since then Uber has made improvements. I can assure Londoners that TfL will continue to closely monitor Uber and will not hesitate to take swift action should they fail to meet the strict standards required to protect passengers.”

In a statement released shortly after the decision, UBER said: "With more than 3.5 million Londoners regularly using Uber, we will continue working hard to be the best possible partner to the city. Our mission of providing safe transport for riders and earning opportunities for drivers has never been more important.

Over the past year, we have made a range of safety-related improvements, including Real Time ID Check for all drivers in the UK, an emergency assistance button, and our first-ever 24 / 7 support line."
